The ichthyological collections brought together in various parts of New Guinea by staff members of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in 1954 and 1955 (cf. Boeseman, 1963), contain a series of scorpion-fishes which are here described as a new species, representing a new genus. The genus Liocranium was established by Ogilby (1903) to contain a new species of scorpion-fish from the east coast of Queensland: L. praepositum. The genus remained monotypic until McCulloch (1921) placed Paracentropogan scorpio Ogilby in it, a species also described from the Queensland coast. Whitley (1933) did not agree, and transferred P. scorpio to a separate new genus Vadesuma. In the meantime Weber (1913) described as Paracentropogon pleurostigma and Paracentropogon cynocephalus two scorpion-fishes from the East Indies. These two species, however, were not well placed in Paracentropogon, and therefore De Beaufort (1949) created the genus Sibogapistus for them. In his valuable report on the freshwater fishes of British Guiana, Eigenmann (1912, pp. 64-73) gave a list of the species, together with comparable lists on the freshwater fishes of the adjacent regions. In sharp contrast with the number of 266 species reported from the Essequibo area only, the total amount of Surinam species proved to be but 118! Although since Eigenmann compiled these lists some more species have been reported from Surinam, the general situation has remained essentially the same, clearly showing the backward state of ichthyological research in this area. The distinction between Harpagochromis and Prognathochromis, and the distinction between these and other cichlid genera of Lake Victoria as proposed by Greenwood (1980), is demonstrated to be artificial. The BM(NH) collections of Haplochromis dichrourus and H. pellegrini were found to be polyspecific and are redescribed. On the basis of specimens formerly included in H. pellegrini a new species is described. Five new species are described based on material from the Mwanza Gulf and Maisome Island. Specimens of H. dichrourus from different areas of Lake Victoria are described separately to demonstrate geographic variation.

During recent research on a small number of freshwater sharks from Lake Jamoer, Netherlands New Guinea, I was struck by the fact that the consulted literature clearly showed a deplorable lack of agreement in the choice of a generic name for the species belonging to the genus Carcharhinus Blainville, sensu Bigelow & Schroeder (1948, p. 320), even among recent authors. ABSTRACT The inshore shoals of basking sharks that appear in spring off the western seabord of Europe have been variously claimed to be part of a seasonal south to north migration, or local, perhaps nuptial, aggregations. The decline in the catches of the Achill Island Fishery in the last decade suggests that the size of the shoals has diminished there. Size/frequency analysis of available records shows a midsummer peak of specimens with a mean length of 3.09 m and a mid-winter peak at 3.52 m; the difference is significant and is ascribed to growth. Beets, at the time employed by Shell B.P. — Delta Investigations, during the period May to August 1960, and in the region between Port Harcourt and Brass. Bagrichthys vaillantii (Popta, 1906), a species of bagrid catfish previously considered a junior synonym of B. macracanthus Bleeker, 1854, is found to be a valid species distinct from the latter.
